  • LIST OF UNIVERSITIES
    • World’s highest Ranked Universities: Universities globally are ranked on the number of research papers published every year. United States is home to majority of such universities which belong to the top 100 in the world. This is owing to the fact that Universities in the US have the latest technology available for research along with the resources and infrastructure.
    • High Quality Education: United States is the #1 destination for students since it offers them the highest quality of education. They believe in constituting the faculty with the best members. US also stresses a lot on application based education hence ensures the faculty members are actively involved in heading research groups.
    • Abundant Options: Students opting to study here are spoilt for choice. USA has more than 4000 educational institutions that offer courses at undergraduate, postgraduate/masters, doctorate levels in various fields. They also encourage interdisciplinary programs (eg. Robotics) and dual degree programs. US also offer various certification courses.
    • Value for Money: An academic degree from the USA is the best investment for any student since it is recognized all over the world. The career options that follow once the student has completed his degree bring very high returns and ensure a very successful and fulfilling career in the United States or wherever else he chooses to establish his professional career.
    • Flexible curriculum: Universities in US provide very flexible programs. Students are open to choose from a variety of courses and electives available in the stream. They can also choose to study electives from another stream after the approval of the program director. This allows the students to specialize in their desired field.
  • Considered financially secure: banks readily provide loans for students who wish to study ms in USA. In order to cover living expenses, International students are allowed to work part time, upto 20 hours/week and 40 hours/week during breaks. Students with strong profiles also get offered scholarships and/or assistantships (subject to availability of funds) on receiving an admit. If not, then students can try for assistantships (research/graduate/teaching/grading) once there.

USA offers education in the following types of institutes:

    • Public universities:These are Government affiliated institutions financially supported by public funds/ taxes, usually in large amounts. Public universities are relatively easy on the pocket. There are many well-known public universities across the country, which have high intakes for International Students.Eg: Pennsylvania State University, Ohio State University, University of California, Kansas State University, University of Texas, California State University, State University of New York
    • Private universities: Private institutions operate without control or support of the government. Tuition fees for these institutions are usually higher compared to Public Universities, but international and domestic students pay the same amount of fees. A few well known private institutions are Long Island University, George Washington University, New York University, University of Southern California and Carnegie Mellon University.
    • Technical Schools:There are schools that offer programs mainly in engineering and are known for their active research projects and graduate programs. Most international students who attend these schools are at a graduate level. Students admitted in these schools tend to have a very strong background in math and science, as indicated by grades and standardized test scores (eg, SAT or GRE).M.I.T. (Massachusetts Institute of Technology), Cal Poly (California Polytechnic Institute), Georgia Tech (Georgia Institute of Technology), NYIT (New York Institute of Technology) and WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute) are some of the schools International students choose to apply to.
    • The Ivy League: These schools are the oldest and very well-known globally. The members of the Ivy League are: Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Brown, Dartmouth, Cornell, Columbia and the University of Pennsylvania. Ivy League universities emphasize on undergraduate liberal arts education, but also boast graduate and professional schools. Admission into these universities is highly competitive.
  • Liberal Arts Colleges: They usually focus on basic training of traditional arts and science disciplines: humanities, sciences and social sciences. Liberal arts colleges are often quite old and are mostly private schools. These colleges are highly rated because they emphasize on small classes, individual attention to students and closer relationships between teachers and students.

American universities mainly offer 2 intakes for International Students

  • Spring in January / February
  • Fall: August / September

The major intake is during Fall (in the month of September), but many universities also offer Spring intakes. Since the subjects offered are almost constant (especially core courses), the student need not worry on losing out on any.

Students are advised to start preparing for applications atleast a year before the intended intake. Entrance tests (GRE/GMAT/SAT and ToEFL/IELTS) should be given before you start with applications. Certain programs in particular universities might require the student to appear for a GRE subject test. This should be confirmed beforehand by checking the program website or contacting the program in-charge.

English language requirements

A test to prove international proficiency is required for every international student applying from a country where English is not the native or first language. A ToEFL score of 90 or higher for PG and 80 or above for UG is a good score. A score of atleast 20/30 in each section is ideal. Similarly on IELTS 6.0 for UG and 6.5 is required for PG. Now, over than 2,500 institutions in the US recognize the IELTS including several top ranked institutions.

  • For Undergraduate program applicants: 10+2
  • For Graduate program applicants: 16 years of education required (10+2+4)
  • Some institutions accept 15 years education into their Bridge Masters Programs
  • Good & strong academic background
  • Good scores in entrance exams like SAT, ToEFL, GRE, GMAT, IELTS etc
  • Strong recommendation letters
  • Crisp and Precise Statement of Purpose/Personal Statement, essays & resumes
  • Certificates of achievement & extra -curricular activity participation
  • Strong financial background or good grades to get a scholarship

Requirements: Covering Letter, Application Fees(to be paid online), Application Form (to be filled online), Statement of Purpose, Essays (specific to the program), Resume, Recommendation Letters,

Transcripts, Mark sheets & Certificates, Bank Statements, Affidavit of Support for Finance, Test Score Reports (to be sent via ets).

*some universities also require the applicant’s academic score to be converted to a 4.0 scale by WES (World Education Services).

    • Will I get into an Ivy League School? The acceptance rate in Ivy League Universities is as low as 1% – 4%. Therefore, in order to ensure admission, a student should also apply to other Universities that offer the program he is looking for. Also, please keep in mind that the entry requisites for Ivy League universities are extremely stringent and only the best from the applications get short-listed for admission.
    • Is a 12+3 years of education enough to study MBA in USA?American Universities follow and recognize a 4 year Bachelor’s program irrespective of the stream. It is therefore advisable that for the student to complete at least 1 year of M.Com/M.Sc after his 3 years of graduation. To top that, B-schools require the applicant to possess at least two years of work experience before the commencement of the program.
    • Will I get guidance for arranging funds?Yes certainly, we would try our best to get you a scholarship. However, please understand that getting a scholarship in USA is very competitive and depends on a student’s academic background. We also advise on how to land an assistantship once the student is there. This again is subject to the student’s performance and interaction with the particular faculty member. We also do help in other financial aides which can be discussed on a case-to-case basis.
    • Is IELTS an easier exam to take than ToEFL?The ToEFL is an English proficiency test based on American English. Since in India the English taught in schools is of British base, one might find ToEFL challenging. IELTS on the other hand tests English language based on International (broadly British) English, one can appear for IELTS.
    • When should I appear for the entrance tests and do the application process?Aspiring students are advised to appear for the entrance tests at least 12-15 months prior to the intake they are aiming for. Applications for the Fall open sometime in August one year in advance. Applications for the Spring intake (January) open between May and June of the previous year. Hence aspiring students are advised to start the application process at least a year prior to the intended semester for admission.
  • Am I allowed to work while studying?Yes, an International student is allowed to work upto 20 hours/week on campus while studying. Students can work 40 hours/week during internships during breaks.
